ACCESSIBILITY

Accessibility statement.

This site should be usable by anyone who wants to read it, including people using a keyboard, a screen reader or a browser set up for their own needs. Here is where that stands, honestly.

01. What we aim for.

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at level AA as our working standard. We regard that as a floor rather than a finish line.

02. What the site does.

Keyboard. Every control can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone and the focus indicator is visible on both the light pages and the dark panels. A skip link at the top of each page jumps straight past the navigation to the content.

Screen readers. Pages use proper headings and landmarks, images and icons that carry meaning are described and the diagrams in the Patterns essays have text descriptions of what they show. When you move between pages, focus moves with you so the change is announced.

Motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the animations stop. Nothing on the site flashes and no content moves on its own except where you have scrolled to it.

Reading. Text can be enlarged without the layout breaking, line lengths are set for reading rather than for the width of the screen and contrast is checked against the standard above.

Print. Every essay prints cleanly, without navigation furniture, for anyone who would rather read on paper or in a board pack.

03. Where we know we fall short.

The typeface is loaded from an external service, so on a slow or restricted connection text may render in a fallback face before it arrives.

The constellation motion in the hero is decorative. It respects a reduced-motion setting, but it is still movement on arrival for anyone who has not set that preference.

We have tested with keyboard navigation and with the accessibility tools built into current browsers. We have not yet completed a full audit with a screen reader across every page.

04. Tell us.

If something here is hard to use, we would rather know than not. Write to [email protected] describing what you were trying to do and what happened. We will fix it and reply.

If you need anything on this site in another format, ask and we will provide it.
